Easier To Decide With Wind Power Pros And Cons

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Meet T. Boone Pickens, an unlikely spokesman for plant wind power. After making his billion-dollar fortune as an oil baron, T. Boone Pickens has had a change of heart and now actively advocates investing in resources renewable energy to take our energy consumption to the next level.

He’s currently investing hundreds of millions on a wind farm in Texas and his hedge fund, BP Capital, is aggressively expanding into the turbine wind energy market as well. He’s proposed a plan to wean America off oil over the next decade. However, there are both wind power pros and cons to consider before moving forward.

wind power facts
In looking at the wind energy facts, let’s first look at the benefits of using turbine wind energy. First off, wind turbines are a clean, domestic source of energy. The wind will never stop blowing, thereby providing an endless source of power if we harness it correctly, with the appropriate back-up generators.

This free source of energy won’t cause green house gases, create radioactive waste or emit pollutants either. So far our use of wind energy alternative has offset carbon dioxide emission by 2.5 billion pounds and reduced other pollutants by 15 million pounds. Compared to solar supply, geothermal and biomass energy, wind energy is relatively cheap. The Department of Energy predicts that alternative wind energy will cost as low as 4 to 6 cents per kilowatt hour in the coming years.

Wind power pros and cons also look at the sustainability of our planet. Another one of the obvious advantages of wind purchase power is that it does not consume any non-renewable resources or fossil fuels. Many of our resources come from coal, natural gas or oil and harm the environment in pursuit of these energy sources.

turbine wind energy
Rainforests are destroyed, mountains are dynamited, rivers are polluted and wildlife is marginalized. Comparatively, the construction and installation of these turbines creates limited environmental impact.

Even though the towers are tall, the land beneath them can still be used for farming, grazing, landscaping and other functions. Now we must look toward wind, solar and geothermal to remain competitive in the global marketplace.

While it may seem like there are ample positive reasons to go forth with a wind energy alternative, there are both wind power pros and cons in this debate. Critics claim that powering the country off turbine wind energy is simply not feasible.

They point out that areas like the U.S. gulf coast have such heavy hurricane winds that the damage to the turbines would be substantial. Additionally, midwest lightning storms will wreak havoc on wind turbine systems and cold areas will introduce the problem of dangerous ice build-up on the wings.

In some Canadian studies, people living near windmill farms complained of suffering from abominable headaches, although this potential danger has not been clinically proven yet.

Use Solar Power to Save Cash and the Planet

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Residential solar power can help you beat the energy crisis and replace your energy company. This article will show you the basics of what renewable energy can do for you. Then check out the links in the article for the specific plans you will need to make it happen.

The world is facing an energy crisis unlike any previously seen. 2008 showed what happens when supply and demand gets out of control. We watched prices of oil, gas, electricity, and virtually all forms of energy double, triple, or even more in price. This problem will only continue to get worse as the demand on energy continues to grow and the non-renewable resources shrink.

So what can residential solar power do for you?

You can reduce your monthly energy bill or even eliminate it by using renewable energy in your home. Can you imagine not having to pay the electric company every month? Every person that uses residential solar power also reduces the demand on our non-renewable resources which will make them last longer. A good solar powered home is also more valuable. Imagine how much more you could sell your house for if you could tell the new owners that they wouldn’t have to pay for energy. Lastly, residential solar power is just good for the planet.

Now that you know what it does, how do you go about using renewable energy?

The obvious way to use solar energy is to harness the suns rays with solar panels and use it to power your house. You can easily do this without spending thousands of dollars per panel by building them yourself. It isn’t that hard and the links at the bottom will show you how you can get started quickly. Some other ways you can use the sun’s energy is to install solar powered accent lighting instead of wired lights, install a solar water heater, install a sky light or light tube to provide light during the day to a room that doesn’t have windows, and using windows to your advantage to heat your house with the sun’s rays or block the suns rays when you want to keep it cool inside.

Hopefully, this has got you thinking about how residential solar power can help you save money and help save the planet. residential solar power is going to be extremely important in the future as our fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources are used up. Thanks in advance for helping to save the world!

How Electricity is Produced from Eco-Friendly Resources and Non-Renewable Resources

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Electrical energy was one of man’s greatest discoveries. It has helped build new civilizations. The large amount of electricity produced has its source in fossil fuels, nuclear fission, water, and wind. This article will explore the different methods of electricity production.

Usually, electricity is generated by turning a large turbine. These turbines need a support to be moved. There are various ways of moving these turbines:

By burning fossil fuels: Electricity is produced when the blades of a turbine are moved by enormous amounts of steam. This steam is generated by heating a lot of water in huge furnaces. The water is heated by burning fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas. This method releases enormous amounts of carbon dioxide in the air, thus severely polluting our atmosphere. We need to rely less on fossil fuels and more on renewable energy in the future.

By water: You must have heard how dams are constructed to produce electricity. A popular method to produce electricity, a water dams serves two purposes: restricting water bodies and producing electricity. Water dams use the river water to move turbines, helping them produce electricity. Electricity generated this way helps control air pollution; however, there can be adverse effects on the bodies of water used so it isn’t perfect.

By wind: Electricity is produced when wind energy is converted to electrical energy. Wind mills or wind turbines are used to churn up enormous amounts of wind energy which is then converted into electrical energy.

By nuclear fission: Nuclear energy can also be used to produce electricity. Nuclear fission causes a chain reaction where the element Uranium is bombarded by neutrons causing it to split. Every time a Uranium nucleus is split, more neutrons are released, causing more splits in the already split Uranium nuclei. The resultant chain reaction generates a lot of heat which is used to heat water into steam which eventually moves turbines to create electricity.

By bio-waste: With technological advancements, electricity is also being produced by bio-waste. Bio-gas is a typical way of generating electricity in rural areas in countries like India. In fact, a new technology evolved in the state of Bihar in India that uses human waste to generate electricity.

By sun: Another way energy is produced is by turning the suns rays into electricity without the use of turbines. residential solar power is becoming very popular and is helping tons of people save money and conserve natural resources. If you are interested in learning more about residential solar power, click on the links I just listed to learn how you can make your own solar panels.

Hopefully, you know a little more about how electricity is produced now. Maybe you even decide it is time to go green and start using environmentally friendly resources.
